3 injured in construction scaffolding collapse

Work was being done on an office building on Morris Park Drive when the collapse occurred.

MINT HILL, N.C. — Three workers suffered serious injuries Wednesday when scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Mint Hill.

The collapse happened at a construction site on Morris Park Drive.

One person was transported to Novant Presbyterian Hospital for treatment for life-threatening injuries, according to Medic. Two other people were taken to the same hospital with injuries described to be serious.

A WCNC Charlotte photojournalist saw other crew members disassembling the scaffolding after the incident.

"I thought they should’ve left it just to document everything since there was an injury involved, but they did get it cleaned up very quickly," Isaac Abee said.

Abee works in the office park and told WCNC Charlotte the incident reminds him of the tragic scaffolding collapse that happened in January 2023.

"I live in the Dilworth, South End area, and right across my apartment complex was where people fell off the scaffolding and died about a year back or so," Abee recalled.

In January 2023, three construction workers died after falling 70 feet from a scaffolding collapse on East Morehead Street. Two companies were cited for safety violations following the incident, including not using strong enough scaffolding and using scaffolding that was damaged.

It’s unclear what caused the collapse in Mint Hill. WCNC Charlotte has reached out to the Mint Hill Police Department and North Carolina's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for details on a possible investigation.

OSHA told WCNC it has been notified of the accident and has opened an inspection.
