'Raw emotions' | Trauma care provider shares how colleagues are handling their mental health needs in wake of deadly Charlotte shootout

Trauma response nurses face a lot when tragedy strikes. This week was no exception.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Following Monday’s tragic ambush, many people are still processing what happened – including trauma workers who were called to help.

“It’s going to take some time. It’s certainly very raw emotions when you have an event like this, and that’s very understandable,” said Dr. Kyle Cunningham, a trauma surgeon with Atrium Health.

Atrium Health has the only Level I trauma response team in the area, so Cunningham says they train and "drill for it multiple times a year."

But even with the training, he admits these situations are never easy.

“Charlotte is growing, so our numbers and what we see is growing as well,” Cunningham said. “Our daily practice does as best it can to prepare you for what you see in a mass casualty, but you’re never fully prepared and ready for that when it actually takes place,” he continued.

Currently, the team is undergoing multiple check-ins to process, and Dr. Cunningham says he’s encouraging anyone needing help to reach out.
