Nonprofit fighting to help kids without beds get a good night's sleep

The organization is looking for any volunteers to help kids in the Carolinas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two to 3% of children across the Carolinas and the southeast do not have a bed to sleep in at night, according to the National Science Foundation. Poor sleep can lead to hyperactivity issue, anxiety and depression, and numerous other heath issues.

Since 2011, Beds For Kids has been dedicated to providing beds and essential furniture to children and their families who are in need. In 2024, the need for these services has grown significantly. The organization accepts gently used furniture and monetary donations. It also hosts bedding drives that further its cause in the Charlotte area.

Volunteers are essential to this nonprofit's success over the years. Lauren Patterson, who’s definitely not afraid to get her hands dirty, is one of those dedicated volunteers.

"It’s not very glamorous, but it needs to be done,” Patterson said.

Patterson was born and raised in Charlotte and lives only a 15-minute drive from the Bed For Kids warehouse southwest of Uptown.

"In one hour, one volunteer can do so much,” Patterson shared.

Right now, the organization is looking for any volunteers to help kids get a good night’s sleep.

"I think that a child who feels safe in their home and gets a good night’s sleep is going to be more successful in life," Patterson said.

Beds For Kids usually delivers to around 30 families a week. The goal next week is, with the help of several suppliers, furnishing 60 to 70 homes. With just 12 volunteers for normal drop-offs, they will need many more people to help make all the deliveries.
