Whataburger plans for Charlotte location approved, zoning records say

The fast food restaurant is planned to be built on Albemarle Road near Rocky River Church Road.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Whataburger, the wildly popular fast food chain known for its Texas origins, could soon open its first location in Charlotte.

Zoning records from the city of Charlotte show that plans for a Whataburger on Albemarle Road have been approved. The fast food restaurant is part of a larger development known as Clear Creek Crossings on Albemarle Road near Rocky River Church Road in east Charlotte. Florida-based Equinox Development is spearheading the Clear Creek Crossings project.

The proposed Whataburger would be located at 12809 Albemarle Road. The plans were approved last week. The project is now in the construction phase, according to zoning records, but no completion date has been set at this time.

Developers filed plans for the Whataburger in August 2023. It was the second time in two years that plans were filed for Whataburger in Charlotte, but the previous plans did not materialize.

Whataburger has been a Texas staple since it opened its first location in 1950 with over 700 locations in the Lone Star State. The fast food chain has expanded to states across the country and now has nearly 300 locations outside of Texas.

The restaurant is unrelated to the local chain of What-A-Burger restaurants found in Concord, Kannapolis, and Mooresville.

A Whataburger spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. The developers did not respond to a request for comment.
