'Tragic accident' | Body of missing 3-year-old located

The sheriff's department brought in a K-9 unit to help, and eventually divers recovered her body from the lake.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff’s Office said the body of a missing 3-year-old girl has been located. Her body was recovered in water not long after 2 p.m. Saturday.

Officials called it a "tragic accident." 

The York County Sheriff issued an alert earlier in the day that the girl was missing, and hours later they recovered her body in the water in Lake Wylie.  

It happened at a house on the water in the Clover area. Authorities say the girl didn't live there but was visiting.

A few terrifying hours ended in heartbreak near Lake Wylie. Investigators are still working to figure out exactly what happened.

A little girl wandered away from her family a little after noon, officials said. Sheriff's deputies desperately searched, warning neighbors.

Officials aren't sure at this time how she got in the water. The Sheriff's Office said this appears to be a tragic accident.

This is still an active and ongoing investigation.
