Crash leads to death investigation in Gaston County

Police report the crash happened on Linsbury Court, which is a subdivision off Highway 279 and Gaston Day School Road.

GASTONIA, N.C. — The Gaston County Police Department is working to gather more information surrounding a strange death that happened Thursday night.

Police said they received a call that stated a vehicle had crashed into a home on Linsbury Court, which is a subdivision off Highway 279 and Gaston Day School Road.

According to officials, a vehicle was spotted zig-zagging through the Gaston County neighborhood knocking over mailboxes and running over lawns before finally crashing into a home. Police later confirmed the man in the car died.

NBC Charlotte spoke with a neighbor, Jeff Thomas, who said he witnessed the crash.

Thomas said he saw the truck across the street and went to help. That's when he said he saw an unresponsive man with a bloody rag wrapped around his hand and arm.

Thomas said he's thankful the car didn't crash into his home or hurt someone else.

"The trajectory should have been for that vehicle to go into our house," Thomas said. "But somehow I think the Lord turned that vehicle and it came to rest at the house across the street."

Thomas said usually there are a lot of children that play on the streets.

"Today, at 2:00 p.m., the streets were empty," Thomas said.

NBC Charlotte is still working to confirm this information with police on the scene. Stay with us for the latest information.
