Quail Hollow Club adding more distance to famed 'Green Mile'

A change was made to hole No. 16 ahead of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Statistically, the "Green Mile," -- holes No. 16, 17 and 18 at Quail Hollow Club -- are the hardest finishing holes on the PGA Tour.

Now, it's getting even harder.

At a Tee Off Reception ahead of the 2024, Wells Fargo Championship, club president Johnny Harris said they will push back the tee box to No. 16, 30 yards.

That will make it a 536-yard, Par 4.

Wyndham Clark, the tournament's 2023 champion, was at the luncheon.

"I would say that's classic Johnny Harris. Always trying to make it better and tougher," Clark said. "It's going to be really challening. I think it's a good change."

Clark stopped by the club on his way to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, and discussed his win at Quail Hollow Club, which was his first on the PGA Tour.

"It will always be special in my hear," he said. "Quail Hollow is such a special golf club."

The victory at Quail vaulted Clark to a new level, as he went on to win the U.S. Open, and began this year with a win at Pebble Beach.

He credits his first win at the Wells Fargo Championship with helping him finish other tournaments on top.

"It really helped me at the U.S. Open saying, hey, it's OK if there's adversity," Clark said. "There were so many things I leaned on and remembered during this week at the U.S. Open."

This year's Wells Fargo Championship will be a signature event on tour, meaning there will be a field of about 70 of the world's best golfers, with no cuts, and a purse of $20 million.

The field will draw from last year's Top 50 in the FedExCup standings, and the top 10 available outside of the current FedExCup standings.

Clark is among the early commitments, along with Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Brian Harman and Sahith Theegala.

This will also be the final year of the Wells Fargo Championship, as the bank will drop its sponsorship after this year. The first Wells Fargo Championship was in 2003.

It remains to be seen if the PGA Tour will have a yearly stop in Charlotte, but Quail Hollow Club is scheduled to host the 2025 PGA Championship.
