Former Panthers LB Frankie Luvu signing with Washington Commanders

Luvu led the Panthers in tackles and finished second in sacks last season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, linebacker Frankie Luvu is taking his talents elsewhere.

Luvu signed a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

From 2021 to 2024, Luvu was one of the key players on the Panthers defense. Luvu led the Panthers in tackles (125) and finished second in sacks (5.5) during the 2023 season. In 2022, Luvu was second on the team in tackles (111) and sacks (7).

One of Luvu's best moments in Carolina was a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4 of 2022. It is so far the only interception of Luvu's career.

Luvu is one of the first pieces of the 2023 Panthers to be shifted to another team as the NFL's free agency period begins.

With Carolina finishing an NFL-worst 2-15 in 2023, it's likely many of the team's free agents will not be resigned. Panthers general manager Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales will likely look to be active in free agency to add players to the roster.
