Rivera: Cam Newton throwing after shoulder surgery

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera confirmed that Cam Newton has been throwing overhand as part of his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera confirmed to media Monday that quarterback Cam Newton has been throwing overhand as part of his rehab process.

Rivera made the news public after video taken from outside the team's practice facility was posted on Twitter last Thursday of Newton throwing with trainers. Rivera spoke to reporters after Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on Monday morning.

Newton didn't throw during Monday morning's session but he was in attendance for practice.

"He's just going through the rehab process," Rivera said. "There really is no timetable. He'll continue to progress and we'll see where he is at the end of the week."

Rivera wasn't pleased that the video was taken and posted online.

"Someone came in and took a picture," Rivera said. "We really don't appreciate people snooping on what we're doing around here."

Newton had the second surgery on his throwing shoulder in three years almost immediately after the 2018 season ended. The 2015 MVP was on pace for one of his finest seasons in the NFL until pain and fatigue in his shoulder limited him for his final six games and forced Newton to sit out the last two games of the season.
