'The goal is reliability and resiliency' | CATS prepares to rollout microtransit pilot program

Beginning later this fall, the microtransit concept will kick off in the Camp North End and University City areas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is preparing to make use of its mobile app to allow customers the ability to hail an on-demand ride through a new, microtransit pilot program.

The concept is already being used in Durham, Wilson and other cities across North Carolina. Now, it's Charlotte's turn.

Beginning later this fall, in the Camp North End and University City areas, the microtransit pilot program will connect routes between transit lines and bring riders closer to their destinations with on-demand services similar to Uber or Lyft.

"The goal is to allow reliability and resiliency within our transit network by activating the mobility options that are available," CATS Director of Planning Jason Lawrence said.

The cost is the same as a bus fare: $2.20. The distance would also be restricted within certain zones.

"That might help out, especially if it’s not an extra expense, like, if it’s still going to cost you the same as the bus fare, and you can guarantee that’s going to happen, that’s great," transit rider Bashir Muhammad said.

Recently, CATS has been plagued with a bus driver shortage and had to drop routes as a result. The hope is through the microtransit program and with the help of third parties providing drivers and vehicles for the pilot, it will make a difference.

"On-demand services with smaller more nimble vehicles that enable transit agencies to go directly to the customers and get them directly to their destinations," Lawrence said.

Once the contractual agreements are worked out with the third party, the plan is to fully roll out the on-demand services next year.

CATS received $750,000 through federal funding in June to help implement the microtransit program.
