CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A musician’s heartwarming effort is meant to bring comfort to some of the people hit hardest by the pandemic.
Emily Cavanagh started an initiative called ‘A Song for You’ earlier this year. As part of the initiative, she sings personalized songs for COVID-19 patients, hospital workers, and people who are terminally ill.
Cavanagh said she records the songs from her New York City apartment and emails them to places around the country. That includes hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes in New York, California, Boston, Phoenix, and Chicago.
Cavanagh said it started as a small initiative and she never expected such an overwhelming response. She told WCNC Charlotte it’s special for her to be there for people in isolation who are without their loved ones.
“This idea that people are dying with no one there to hold their hand, that was a lot harder for me to wrap my head around," Cavanagh said. "So it’s not to say a song is a substitute at all for somebody being there in a room with you, but this is a way to share a little peace and a little sense of hope."

Cavanagh said other musicians also joined the effort. Now, she’s considering using the initiative to start a non-profit organization in 2021.
