Prominent businessman accused of driving into restaurant, killing family members pleads 'not guilty'

Roger Self is accused of killing his daughter, Katelyn Self, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Self, in the May 2018 incident.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A prominent Gaston County businessman will head to trial next year after pleading "not guilty" to charges he purposely crashed his SUV into a crowded restaurant, killing his daughter and daughter-in-law.

During a Monday afternoon court hearing, Roger Self began crying as prosecutors read the indictments against him.

Self is accused of intentionally driving his SUV into the dining room of the Surf & Turf Lodge in May 2018.

Investigators said he hit and killed his daughter, Gaston County Sheriff's Deputy Katelyn Self, as well as his daughter-in-law Amanda Self, a trauma center nurse at CaroMont Health.

Self's family members, friends and the owner of the Surf and Turf Lodge packed the courtroom during Monday's hearing.

Self's defense attorney, Richard Beam, said he still has a lot of evidence case he has to go through.

"The state has provided me with about two terabytes of information," Beam said. "We're actively working through that, but as you can imagine, that's going to take a while."

Self's trial is scheduled for February 2020.
