I-77 southbound reopens following crash involving overturned tanker truck

The southbound lanes of Interstate 77 were closed Friday morning after the tanker truck overturned near Rock Hill, South Carolina.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Interstate 77 southbound approaching Rock Hill has reopened following a multi-vehicle crash Friday in which a tanker truck overturned.

The crash happened before 6 a.m. near mile marker 83, which is the exit for South Sutton Road. A tanker tractor-trailer and at least one other vehicle were involved in the crash. The tanker trailer flipped over during the wreck, officials said.

At noon, two of four southbound lanes were reopened at the site of the crash. Southbound delays stretched back several miles into Fort Mill while congestion worked to clear.

Crews had to pump fuel out of the wrecked tanker truck before any portion of the roadway could reopen.

No serious injuries were reported in the crash.

During the closure, drivers were advised to use US 21 as an alternate route.

York County deputies asked drivers who are stuck in traffic to not turn around Deputies said there have been several drivers who did that, which can cause a wrong-way crash.

UPDATE: (9:00 am) Deputies are stationed on the on ramps to keep drivers from goi g the wrong way. If you’re stuck in #traffic, you’re stuck. We hope to have 2-lanes open soon. #YCSONews
