CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Heavy rain and lightning have prompted PGA Tour officials to suspend the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in south Charlotte. The quick-moving area of rain moved south and east away from Uptown Charlotte toward Matthews and Monroe.
While a few severe thunderstorms earlier in the day Friday produced hail over South Carolina, the threat to Quail Hollow Club was mostly isolated to heavy rain and potential lightning. PGA officials may suspend play if lightning strikes within eight miles of the course.
WCNC Charlotte Brad Panovich wants communities, especially those in South Carolina, to stay Weather Aware for possible severe weather until 9 p.m. Friday.
Hail had accumulated in Chesterfield as a result of the storms. A photo of the hail was shared with Panovich on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter.
To help keep you aware of the weather threat in the hours ahead, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for counties including for Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina and Anson, Richmond, Stanly and Union counties in North Carolina. A severe thunderstorm watch means storms are possible in the hours ahead. The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for those locations until 9 p.m.
WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich is tracking the storms for any potential severe weather developments. As conditions warrant, Panovich will provide updates on-air and online to help keep you weather aware.
