Stay weather aware for scattered strong-to-severe storms on Memorial Day

The threat of storms for the greater Charlotte area Monday has largely diminished.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A storm threat for the greater Charlotte area Monday has lowered with most of the storms staying to the south and east of the area.

Ahead of severe thunderstorms on Sunday night, the WCNC Charlotte Weather Team has wanted you to stay Weather Aware because of the threat of scattered storms. Storms Sunday were strong enough to produce lightning, small hail and gusty winds.

A storm Sunday night was responsible for an early end to NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600, which was called after a two-hour rain delay.

Despite a medium threat of severe weather Monday in Charlotte, most of the area remained dry. The greater Charlotte area was able to avoid most of the storm threat because morning clouds helped stabilize the atmosphere. Elsewhere in the Carolinas, where clouds were clear and the sun was shining, severe storms were able to develop.

An isolated shower or storm could not be completely ruled out later Monday evening ahead of a cooler and drier evening.
