QC Happenings: Events for the first weekend of June

Plaza Midwood hosts a block party --- and more around the greater Charlotte area.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As temperatures soar to the highest we've seen yet this year, here are events you can do around Charlotte this weekend:

Saturday, June 3

Kids drone event

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, DroneScape, Sullenberger Aviation Museum, Drone Charlotte, and other partnering agencies will host a Drone Community TRUST Training on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Police Activities League at 1330 Spring Street, Charlotte.  Upon conclusion of the training, a cookout and drone flights for youth will take place.

13th Annual Keep Pounding 5K

Help raise funds for cancer research and patient care at Atrium Health Levine Children's and Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute.

Participant check-in begins at 6:45 a.m. outside of Levine Cancer Institute at 1021 Morehead Medical Dr, Charlotte 28204. 

Registration is $35 for the adult 5K and $25 for the Youth 5K. You can register here.

Charlotte Council Member Victoria Watlington town hall meeting

District 3 spring social town hall meeting to discuss: Alternatives to violence, crime & safety updates, road projects for CDOT and NCDOT, Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), and upcoming district 3 rezoning petitions & decisions.

Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Steele Creek Community Place at Christ the King Church, located at 13501 South Tryon Street.

Just for You Barber/Styling Academy

On Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 11 a.m., Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will host a kickoff event at Just for You Barber/Styling Academy, located at 5108 Regan Drive, Charlotte N.C., 28206. The event will celebrate participating barbershops and connect young people with literacy through story times, face painting and access to MoLi, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's mobile library.

Pride Thrift Market

Thriftpony hosts the pride thrift sale to kick off the first weekend of pride month from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. at 1110 Morningside Drive.

Craft vintage market

Craft Vintage Market heads to the Brewers at 4001 Yancey from 12 p.m. through 5 p.m.

McAdvenville greenway ribbon cutting

A new section of the greenway in McAdvenille opens at 4 p.m. at 102 Main Street. The event features children's games at 4:30 p.m., live music, and fireworks. 

Spring Roll in Salisbury

The Pedal Factory's second annual Spring Roll event will feature bikes, kids BMX clinic, music, contests and an auction.  The Spring Roll, set for June 3 at 3 p.m., in the 300 block of East Council Street, will raise money to support The Pedal Factory, a local nonprofit community bike center that aims to give everyone access to a bicycle, for the purpose of transportation, recreation and improved health and fitness.  

NoDa 5k and Arts Market

The Noda 5K race will kick off at 6 p.m. from NoDa Brewing Company on North Tryon Street, but the party starts before the race. At 2 p.m., the public is invited to visit an arts market featuring several vendors with local artists. 

BODYARMOR state games

Multiple dates

Relocated from Greensboro, North Carolina Amateur Sports hosts a variety of summer sports competitions around Charlotte starting this weekend.

Sunday, June 4

Porch Party

Salud Beer Shop in Charlotte's NoDa neighborhood is hosting a Porch Party Sunday from 5 p.m. through 8 p.m. Rain or shine, the event will feature wine, beer, and "good vibes." 

Plaza Midwood block party

Featuring roller skating, music, and local businesses such as Moo and Brew, Kilted Buffalo Plaza, the Warmack, Sanctuary Imports, Winnies Boutique, Roam & Dweell, and the Hop Shop. The event is happening at the corner of Lamar and Central Avenues from 1 p.m. through 4 p.m.
