'The greatest shower in town' | Carolina veteran gets bathroom makeover

Due to his disabilities, Lawrence Grandberry Sr.'s bathroom became hard to use. He could no longer get into his tub and needed a bigger shower.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands of veterans call North Carolina home; it's the most military-friendly state in the nation.

However, It's no secret that when our military members come home, they don't always get the help they deserve.

"Things happen and they come home and need help."

"Most of us in the military are too proud to ask for help."

So when veterans do ask for help, it's up to all of us to get them what they need.

"We always love to be able to do community projects. We've done a lot of work with veterans over the years. This project was special."

That's exactly what Bath Fitter and Purple Heart Homes did for Lawrence Grandberry Sr., who was in the Army during the Vietnam War.

"They tried to send me to Vietnam, but too many of my friends was coming back in coffins."

"I didn't go overseas, but what we were doing here was just as important. We were preparing young men and women to prepare to fight for our country."

"I enjoyed my tour. If I had to do it again, I would. I was almost 60 when 9/11 happened and I was so upset. I was ready to drop everything and go back. I said, 'Send me'. My brothers said the same thing. Once you go one time, you would do it again. It means that much for our country to have freedom. What we pay is a small thing. Yeah, it's a life, but we save many lives."

Once he left the military, Grandberry worked for General Motors until he retired. Now, at 70-years-old, his health is declining. He has neck and lower back pain as well as very little feeling in his legs and hands.

Due to his disabilities, Grandberry's bathroom became hard to use. He could no longer get into his tub and needed a bigger shower as well as some other upgrades.

"Mr. Granberry's file came across my desk and I was assigned as his project manager. Bath Fitter wanted to do a bathroom remodel for a veteran and I knew Mr. Granberry and his file popped out. I wanted to make sure they were taken care of."

"A lot of cases, the bathrooms aren't safe. We have veterans who haven't been able to use their bathrooms for months or years."

Several organizations got together to create the perfect bathroom.

"The greatest shower in town."

"Absolutely just what I needed."

"Words cannot say how much I appreciate what has been done."

"It has really brightened my mood."

"It's very gratifying knowing we're able to give back to the men and women that have served our country selflessly."
